[Devidaes] - Into the Depths — Description

He hadn't a clue of how his day had lead to this. Oru woke up as per normal, his best friend Parvos still slumbering in the bed nearest to him with their new pet siorkit curled up beside the still daeling. It had only been a meer day after the Light Festival had concluded, and Oru had questioned just how he was able to get up so early after helping clean up the night prior. He attempted to recall if he had dreamt that night. The tall devidae was unable to remember anything of the sort, and wished now that he was given prior warning to the events that had unfolded that day.

As with most days he hauled himself up from bed and checked himself in the mirror. He had grown quite accustomed to this habit, as some days he would awaken to something new on his body. First, he checked his face. Nothing. At least conversations wouldn't be awkward. But as he turned, the tall cervid realized that he did indeed have somewhat of a "growth spurt" overnight. Luckily not in height, as he already towarded over most of the residents of the Nursery, but changes in other parts of himself. The first that stuck out to him literally stuck out; his tail had grown long and slim, with a strange orb at the tailtip that reflected the design of his nubs. He swayed it a bit, side to side, to get a feel for the new length. Oru then noticed that his sides appeared...wrinkled? No, no, it was something else. He craned his neck awkwardly in attempt to locate what was previously his wings. The dark grey devidae spread one wing out and gave a slight jump. His wings had grown larger, and appeared similar in shape to that of dragons in storybooks. Rotating the wing, he spread it to it's entirety. They were not big enough to fly just yet, but perhaps maybe glide. The membrane of his wings, like his new tail's tip, had also taken on the appearance of his nubs. Oru, after checking over once more for any other changes, made his way to the kitchen to make himself a quick breakfast before any of the daelings could wake up to bother him for a ride on his back.

Despite the changes to his body, nothing could prepare him for this. The sluggish morning had turned into a whirlwind by noon, and the rest was a blur. As he and other devidaes were escorted to none other than the Great Tree, nearby devidaes gave suite, some just wanting to wish them good luck while others barraded them with questions. The mages muttered between each other, and stray devidaes complained about not being picked themselves. Oru looked back to find Parvos and could only spot him darting through the crowd in attempt to meet up with his brotherly figure. Unfortunetly the small daeling was not fast enough, and soon became lost in the sea of devidaes.

The selected devidaes were placed around the thick trunk of the tree as the mages allowed family and friends to wish them luck on their trials. To no surprised to Oru, Parvos was allowed to say his temporary goodbyes. Through scared tears all Parvos could ask was for Oru to get back safely. Oru reassured Parvos that he'd be okay, however personally doubted such. The mages escorting Parvos away, the tall devidae gave Parvos one last wave before turning back to the Tree's bark. Glancing around, he noticed entrances of all sorts open for the other devidaes surrounding the trunk. Some were incredibly fancy door with glowing bits, while some were more humble arches. He pondered if these differing openings reflected the devidaes entering, when he felt his gaze snap back in front of him. Two smaller, yet still ginormous roots rose up from the earth slowly, the soil around them sinking steadily into the gaps as if pulled in. The roots drew in opposite directions, revealing a wooden cavern into the depths of the Great Tree. As if by cue, purplish fog drained out of the entrace, leaving Oru's vision slightly obscured. Finishing the entrance, the roots dug themselves into the ground temporarily, awaiting the devidae to walk towards the light, into his trial. Oru knew the task ahead of him was a great honor, as well as a difficulty. It would test him to the limits, physically and mentally. He knew nothing of what he would encounter, other than the "weird animals and magic signs" a previous trial-goer had told him about. Oru remembered the gouge upon the devidae's head and knew that he could very well meet a similar fate, or worse. Feeling the harsh, yet comforting teal light drawing him in as the sun set, the tall grey devidae began to step deeper into the fog, where his journey would truly begin.
